Amitabh Bachchan turns 70 today. Can you believe it? I had a crush on him when I was five which died within a year or two. But he’s still going strong in the charm department. I recently spoke to fashion consultant Mona Hinduja who has styled him for the Cadbury commercials. She said that meeting him was a pleasure and it was definitely one of the highlights of her career.
Anyone who has tuned into “Kaun Banega Crorepati” knows that it’s Bachchan who makes the show appealing. Trust me, there are times, when even prize money of Rs 1 crore can’t make trivia look interesting. Apart from his personality, the one thing that comes through is his sense of style. Since he is a celebrity, it’s easy to think that someone else is responsible for his look. However, I chatted with designer Nachiket Barve, a family friend of the Bachchans, and learnt a few things about Big B’s fashion quotient.
What is Amitabh Bachchan’s personal style?
Bachchan is definitely one of India’s best dressed people. His trademark is definitely his focus on quality. And he is very occasion appropriate; no matter what the occasion, he is ready for it. Therefore he can easily pull off a formal look or an irreverent look with equal elan. He is a style icon and an inspiration for the Indian man.
What are his favourite brands?
Amitabh Bachchan curates his own style. He has a strong personal style and that comes through no matter what brand he wears. There are people who look like the clothes wear them. In his case, he lends elegance to anything he wears.
What does he look for in a brand?
He pays a lot of attention to detail and prefers things that are well made.
What do you think is a great formal look for him?
A well-cut, classic, grey or navy suit. It would be perfect for the award functions he attends and he would wear it with panache.
And a casual look?
A casual look that Amitabh Bachchan favours is a white pathani suit paired with a nice jamawar or pashmina shawl. This is what he prefers to wear while travelling to shoots or while meeting fans at his home. It’s so simple and yet he makes it look elegant.
What is your favourite look on him, and what did you enjoy designing for him?
It’s hard to pull out just one look, but I think my personal favourite would be the Tanishq project for which I worked with him and styled both Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan. As far as films are concerned, I loved his look in “Deewar”. I liked the way he took a simple blue shirt and made it look so stylish.
How is he to work with?
He is a perfectionist and so am I, and therefore it’s easy to work with him. He has a deep understanding of what constitutes elegance and style and takes a lot of pride in looking his best.
