Have you ever felt like you were born in the wrong decade? I was born in the 80’s and those ruffled skirts and shoulder pads did nothing for me. I always had a thing for vintage styles that define the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. I yearned for red and tangerine lips, pinned curls and pin-up style dresses. Thankfully, the recently concluded Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week showcased some vintage inspired makeup trends that are ruling the ramps the world over. Designers like Pernia Qureshi, Neha Sharma and Shyamal and Bhumika gave their girls old Hollywood charm with lacquered hair, dark lips and winged tip eyes. I spoke to G0uri Kapur, celebrity make-up artist for tips on how to create each look. I am certainly trying look three. What about you?
How to achieve a nice soft, glowing look with a hint of drama
Keep your foundation light by going for sheer coverage. Mix a pearly liquid shine with the foundation for a soft glow. Enhance your lip colour; 3D glosses are a great way to add zing to a neutral colour if you’re not in to bold lip colours. Keep your eyes soft, yet defined. Use eyeliner to create winged tips for subtle drama.
How to apply lip gloss perfectly
Apply lipstick, then blot with a tissue and reapply a thin layer of lipstick over which you can apply gloss. Don’t overdo the lipstick and gloss, else it would bleed. Longstay sticky glosses are the best bet for long wear. If you still have a problem, apply gloss on the center of the mouth and avoid the corners. This adds a pout without a gloss overload.
Where to wear this look
Early evening parties and can be carried into the night. Wear it with outfits in soft, pastel shades in feminine silhouettes.
How to achieve perfect wine lips
A merlot colour looks fabulous when it’s done right. It’s best suited for fuller lips. A mix of maroon and purple create perfect wine lips. If you don’t get the right colour, mix the two shades. This way, you can tweak the amount of purple mixed and vice versa depending on your personality, choice and complexion.
Which complexion is it best suited for
A really deep wine works well with wheatish or deeper wheatish skin tones, but can be customised to work on any complexion.
How to wear this colour from morning to evening
Apply a layer of lipstick and dab it to create a matte effect. This look is not too strong and can be worn during the day. However, if you like drama, then don’t dab it and carry along your lipstick for frequent reapplication. Just remember not to wear this colour with very dark outfits as it tends to look rather severe if it’s not balanced right.
What type of clothes is it best suited for
This colour can work with both ethnic and western outfits. When teaming it up with western outfits, keep the eyes soft and the lips bold.
How to achieve lacquered waves
Start by drying your hair, but not completely. Take a small amount of hair gel with strong fixing power and warm it in your hands. Then, apply it on your hair, gently straightening it and creating a roll with the lock in the front. Fix it with a long straight sectioning clip. Remove the clips after the hair dries and get ready to shine.
How to pull off this look in a less severe form
Applying mousse instead of gel and using a barrel tong gives you beautiful retro waves that is soft yet high on glam.
The perfect occasion to wear this makeup
This is an evening look. Think red carpet affairs or a special night out. The softer look can be used for a fun night out with the girls – either ways it’s a head turner.
