Ace Bollywood designer Neeta Lulla (see pic below) has dressed Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for many of her memorable films including Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas and Jodhaa Akbar. She’s been a long time associate of the actress and someone Aishwarya trusts wholeheartedly with her sartorial choices. Why, Neeta even designed Ash’s wedding wear.
On the eve of Ash’s birthday, I spoke to Neeta to understand what the enigma called Aishwarya is about. While arrogance is supposed to be a Scorpio trait (at least Linda Goodman will tell you that), Aishwarya is completely a director’s actor, according to Neeta. “She doesn’t interfere with the director’s vision of what the look of her character should be like. She’s comfortable with whatever clothes are done for her,” adds Neeta.
Off screen of course, Ash has her own inputs taking into consideration her comfort level and the kind of statement she wants to make. “She’s more comfortable in Indian wear. She looks elegant in them. She likes pastels that complement her eye colour and prefers sarees for public appearances. She also likes Anarkalis and churidar kurtas. Her fabric of choice is chiffon or any other flowy fabric,” Neeta reveals.
Neeta also prefers her in Indian wear and dubs Ash’s personal style as ‘simplistic.’ Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdaas and Jodhaa Akbar are Neeta’s favourite looks amongst all the movies she’s worked with Aishwarya on. “The combination of her beautiful face, lovely character and apt clothing made the looks of these films iconic,” says Neeta.
When it comes to casuals, Ash is more into jeans and ganjees and wears a lot of jackets while in transit. “She likes gowns for formal evening dos. She’s particular about what she wears; you have to be when you’re in the glamour business,” Neeta maintains.
