Dress your personality – Rock Chic

What is it about rockers and their unique brand of edgy, sexy, rebellious style that makes them so universally appealing? Luckily for you, you don’t need to be a rocker to adopt this style.

For inspiration, just take a look at the plethora of celebrities strutting around in shredded jeans and leather. Men easily flock to this look – bad boys like Salman Khan, Lenny Kravitz and Kanye West love their leather, fur and shredded jeans. Other fans include Adam Levine, Arjun Rampal, Akshaye Kumar and every woman’s heartthrob – Ryan Gosling.

When it comes to female celebs, Rihanna, Kate Moss, Victoria Beckham, Keisha and Halle Berry were amongst the many spotted over the years in leather skinnies and blazers. Closer home, our beautiful Bollywood babes have been displaying their wild side on and off screen. Katrina Kaif played an edgy rock star in Mere Brother ki Dulhan. The ultimate rocker girl, Priyanka Chopra, has been spotted in leather while promoting her new single – In the City. Not rebellious enough? How about Deepika Padukone in her studded skirt, sequined sheer top and bright pink bra in the opening scenes of Cocktail?

You are a closet rock star if you:

  • Don’t care what others think of you
  • Live dangerously
  • Love dark colours and leather
  • Can’t get enough of skulls
  • Don’t think twice before wearing something with studs
  • Dream of the next tattoo or body piercing
  • May or may not listen to rock but that’s besides the point
  • Love black nail paint

Here are a few tips on how to incorporate the rock chic look:

rock chic products WOMEN
Look hot in skinny jeans (preferably leather), a tank top with lace inserts and a cropped denim/leather jacket. Accessorise with skull studs and gladiator heels. Leave your hair loose. Apply lip gloss and smudge your kajal for a smouldering look.
Tip: Wear this look to, where else, but a rock concert!

Wear a graphic printed black T-shirt with distressed jeans and boots. Cover up with a leather jacket. Accessorise with combat boots, and leather wristlets with metal studs. You can also try leather necklaces.
Tip: Wear this look to a bonfire night by the hills.

Shahid plays hot and cool

There are heroes who fall in the guy next door category and then there are those who exude massive sex appeal. Shahid Kapoor, who turns 32 today, used to fall in the first group at the beginning of his career, but over the years, he’s shown us his edgy brooding side and the new beefed up physique which makes him the perfect man – equal parts nice and naughty. Here’s looking at his two avatars:

shahid kapoorNICE
Ishq Vishk (2003)
In his debut film, Shahid played Rajiv Mathur, your typical self absorbed college kid who thinks only of himself when he’s not thinking of girls. He wore muscle tees, sweatshirts, denim jackets and faded jeans for his role. He accessorised his looks with sneakers, sling bag, a string necklace with a pendant and a cheesy grin. The look oozed cutesy.

Dil Maange More (2004)
Shahid’s character, Nikhil Mathur, gets tangled in the affections of three girls and confusion ensues. He wore long and short sleeved T-shirts, faded jeans, hoodies, long sleeved shirts worn under red and yellow half sleeved tees (the hot trend those days) and varsity jackets.

Jab We Met (2007)
Aditya Kashyap, the serious young industrialist, is one of Shahid’s most memorable characters. The outfits he wore included suits, fitted shirts, trousers, blazers, cardigans and Pathani suits. He accessorised his look with a sling bag and glasses.

Mausam (2011)
Playing a movie set in a different era has its charms. Shahid, who took on the role of Harry, wore shirts, jeans and V-neck sweaters in the first half of the movie. In the second half, he wore Airforce pilot uniforms, bandgalas, suits, turtle necks and blazers with equal elan.

The stars of Ghaziabad

It’s not often that you come across an action movie rooted in real life. Zila Ghaziabad is based on the gang war that took place between two Gujjar gangs in Ghaziabad in the 90s. The main characters are played by Vivek Oberoi (Satbir Gujjar), Arshad Warsi (Mahender Fauji Bainsla Gujjar), Sanjay Dutt (Pritam Singh) and Minissha Lamba (Kareena). I spoke to Nidhi Yasha, the founder of The NY Studio and costume designer for the movie to get an idea about the character’s outfits.

Trendy Thursdays – Full Sleeved Gowns

When Aishwarya Rai Bachchan walked the Cannes red carpet in 2012 dressed in a full sleeved Elie Saab gown, everyone assumed it was a great way to cover up her newly acquired plus size figure. However, over the months, many celebrities with figures to die for have been spotted in similar outfits and the trend is only getting stronger.

Last year pretty much every designer experimented with long sleeved gowns. This included big names such as Prada, Gucci, Michael Kors, Valentino and Versace. The creations ranged from clean minimalist pieces by Calvin Klein, net and lace show stopper gowns by Alexander McQueen (remember Sonam Kapoor at Cannes?) to edgy peekaboo outfits by Prabal Gurung (that Deepika Padukone recently rocked in the Filmfare Awards). Sabyasachi, Sailex Ngairangbam and Rajat K Tangri were amongst the few Indian designers who created long sleeved gowns.

Angelina Jolie has been a long sleeve veteran for quite a while now. She wore a black Versace gown to the Oscars in 2000. Then there was the emerald green Versace full sleeved gown she wore to the Golden Globes in 2011. For the Berlin premiere of Land of Blood and Honey in 2011, she wore a gold Jenny Packham and a grey silk cashmere Ralph & Russo. This was followed by black lace and high slit Michael Kors creation for the 2012 Producers Guild Awards. The other Hollywood celebs who adopted this trend include fashion plates such as Paris Hilton, Rihanna, Jenifer Lopez, Kate Hudson, Jessica Biel and Miley Cyrus. Closer home, Sonam wore long sleeved gowns long before it was a popular trend. New Bollywood long sleeve converts include Freida Pinto, Deepika Padukone, Neha Dhupia and Gauhar Khan.

Stylish deux

You know how it is with celebrity couples – when they step out together, it’s a real treat for the eyes. You have a tough time deciding which one half looks better. Their red carpet looks are carefully co-ordinated and other public appearances make headlines in the fashion press. We sorted the most stylish pairs in style personalities in this season of love.

stylish couplesBOLLYWOOD:

Bollywood royalty meets the Nawab of Pataudi! Sophisticated and elegant – that’s their style mantra. Saif looks impeccably dressed in everything from three piece suits to pathani suits. Kareena complements him in luxurious ethnic wear, chic western casuals and designer dresses. Minimal make-up, kohl laden eyes and shiny hair complete her look.

For the King Khan and his better half, everything is a red carpet occasion. Suits and tuxedos are what he does best and Gauri always manages to grab the limelight with her stunning body con dresses. Having an hourglass figure, big hair and a great style sense definitely help.

Everyone looks good on the red carpet, but these two look great in everyday casuals, party gear and even while travelling. Shirts and tees paired with washed denims and a peak cap define Hrithik’s casual look. Suzanne makes casuals edgy with unusual choices like plaid shirts, asymmetric hem tanks, scarves, stacked bracelets, kohl laden eyes and tattoos.

Being models gave them a head start in the fashion scene. He can pull off everything from a casual look to red carpet tuxes and she is still rocking that hot bod in everything from maxi dresses to spaghetti tops. They are a dream on the red carpet.
