Winning formulae for winter

makeupYou can get away with minimal skin maintenance during summers, but winters are a different cup of tea. Dry, flaky skin and chapped lips are some of the horrors winters bring along. I take real good care of my skin in summers, but I’ve noticed that winters call for a different strategy. Check out the tips below and say hello to better skin this season:

Every day
Start treating your skin well today and you’ll be reaping compliments 20 years down the line. Here’s the basis morning routine.
Use a light cream cleanser or face wash that removes excess oil and grime from your face but leaves it lightly moisturised. Do not use a cleanser that makes your skin feel dry and stretched after use.
Swipe a non-alcoholic toner with a cotton ball on your face to remove any residue left behind by the cleanser.
Apply serum on cleansed skin.  Serums are light but packed with anti-aging and moisturising ingredients. Choose serums that target specific problems like dull skin or wrinkles.
Moisturiser with SPF
Don’t skip sunscreen just because the sky looks overcast. A moisturiser with a broad-spectrum SPF 15 is the minimum requirement for day wear.
Lip balm
Prevent dry flaky lips by using lip balms or chap sticks with natural oil based formulae. Use a lip balm with SPF for better protection.

These boots are made for walking

The weather is getting chillier by the day and I for one, have started wearing my woollens with a vengeance. The only thing missing in my closet is a pair of warm, cozy boots. You know how it is – you’re dressed from top to toe in warm layers, but your feet are literally naked in ballerinas or heels that are better suited for summers. It’s the same with men. They keep their feet warm in bulky sports shoes or trekking boots while going out or suffer the cold in stylish shoes that can’t handle the weather. Fear not, I’ve done a little bit of research to give you some boot options for this season. I’ll be stocking up on desert boots this winter since it’s not going to get crazy cold in my part of the world. What about you?

Time for a bash, Ash!

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan turns 39 today! Sure, she’s drawn a lot of flak for her recent weight gain, her appearances at Cannes and her acting skills, but scroll through a list of the biggest hits in the past two decades and she’s in almost each one of it! Unlike other Indian beauty queens whose shelf lives were limited in Bollywood, Aishwarya’s romance with Bollywood has been a lingering one. Her list of achievements includes being the brand ambassador of Lóreal, being a permanent fixture at Cannes, acting in Hollywood movies, marrying into the first family of Indian cinema and of course being friends with Oprah. The last one is on my to-do list as well and therefore I’m totally jealous of her.
aishwarya ethnicHum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999)
Aishwarya played a Gujarati lass and wore traditional Gujrati ghagra cholis in bright shades with heavy embellishment in the first half of the film. Her heavy ethnic jewellery and the mini blue ghaghra choli in the Nimbuda stopped many hearts.

Devdas (2002)
Aishwarya played a Bengali girl in this iconic film. Her favourite designer Neeta Lulla styled her in sarees draped the Bengali way. The short, puff sleeved blouses with tassels and lace inserts became a rage with women across the country that year. And she made for quite a vision in the red and white sari in the Dola Re song.

Fireworks on Katy’s birthday

katy perryKaty Perry turns 28 today! But doesn’t it seem like she’s been around forever? Well, she’s come a long way. In fact she’s a lesson in self transformation. First we had Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson – cute girl next door singing gospel. Then there was Katy Perry – pin-up girl of the century with hits like “I kissed a girl” and “ET“.

There’s a whole list of trends that I can trace back to her – dresses with cinched waists, vintage hair and make-up, coloured hair, bright make-up and crazy prints. Also, she did for curvy girls what Kate Moss did for skinny girls – she made it hot! With her pin-up style, bold fashion and unbridled talent, is it any wonder that she gave us “Firework” Who else would know that ” You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine, Just own the night like the 4th of July…

If you want to own the KP look, here are a few tips:

  • Vintage hair styled to perfection along with vintage make-up - red lips, eye liner etc. Follow the tips in our earlier post.
  • Colour your hair in a sexy shade of blue if you like drama. Else, go with jet black.
  • A sexy, fitted dress that accentuates your curves. Go for bright, colourful prints. If you want to play it safe, then leopard prints or red would do just fine (Yeah, that’s playing safe in the Katy Perry dictionary). The daring ones can experiment with low necklines.
  • A broad belt.
  • A pair of pumps or peep toe heels in a bright shade like red.
  • Tonnes of happy attitude. Sing one of her songs to set the mood.
