Shirt up!

designerask any fashionista to pick one classic number from their wardrobe and it would almost always be a well-fitted shirt. Ask Rajesh Pratap Singh! Dress it up, dress it down, tie a knot or tuck it in, the humble shirt lends itself to every style your heart desires. An extension of your basic shirt, a shirt dress has a feeling of timelessness in its silhouette and tops on the utility quotient. No wonder that this season most of the design houses have sworn by this one garment that is a wardrobe classic. From naturally-nautical Tommy Hilfiger to couture-chic Christian Dior, almost every designer featured shirt dresses in his/her collection. Viktor and Rolf, Paul Smith, Gucci, Chloe, Carven and Maiyet gave a fashionable nod to this classic trend.

B town beauties like Vidya Balan, Shriya Saran, Kareena Kapoor, Avantika Malik, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma, and Sonam Kapoor have extended a warm welcome to this trend. We love how Kareena wore her safari-inspired shirt dress with a cross body bag and matching pumps. While keeping the rest of it really simple, it’s also a great inspiration for a day-look.

Go for light layering this summer by wearing a vest over your shirt dress. If you are feeling adventurous, then knot the layered ganji on one side. Add shoes and headband to complete the look.

Add a shot of Boho-chic to your shirt dress by wearing it over a fitted dress. Keep the button placket open, wrap a belt around it and add headband and boots. And you thought you were not a flower child!

Get dressy by teaming a blazer with your shirt dress. With hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail and with a classic red pout, you will turn heads, no doubt.

From a perfect schoolgirl-like dress to a sophisticated beach cover-up, a shirt dress can play to the gallery. Now work hard, play harder.

Bollywood Fridays – Gulaab Gang

but for a High Court order, debutant director Soumik Sen’s Gulaab Gang, toplining two female Bollywood heavyweights, would have released today, on the eve of International Women’s Day. Set against the Indian hinterlands, veteran actresses Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla star in this desi flick about a gang of women who stand up against social atrocities. Sharing screen space for the first time together, Madhuri plays Rajjo, who single-handedly champions the cause of underprivileged women opposite Juhi’s Sumitra Devi, a scheming politician. The film that resonates with the tenets of women’s empowerment now stares ahead at a delayed release.

Given the rustic feel of the film, the leading ladies are mostly seen draped in six yards with minimal accessories. Toeing the spirit of the film’s title, the ladies have donned pink, a colour often used to denote women’s empowerment. The ensemble cast has also teamed churidaars and manly-shirts with their ethnic wear, an acknowledgement of how androgynous dressing has become a part of life for us, ladies.

Juhi Chawla as Sumitra Devi

Though the film has not been able to generate too much of pre-publicity buzz, the women-oriented subject has caught the eye of many.

Disclaimer: The cast, crew and production house of Gulaab Gang has not endorsed Myntra or any of its products.

Trendy Thursday – Mesh

now you see me, now you don’t. That’s exactly how the mesh trend can add allure to your overall persona. Layer it up on windy days and dare to bare when it’s bright and sunny. There’s so much you could do with mesh.

designers (1)

Designers have gone full-throttle in experimenting with this trend with various shapes, cuts and textures. From mesh over-sized shirts to embellished mesh skirts, the Spring/Summer 2014 runways have been a sheer delight. Vera Wang’s intricate mesh tunic with pants was in contrast to the straightforward mesh top by Elizabeth & James. Christian Dior, Derek Lam, 3.1 Philip Lim and Alexander Wang also sent out models dressed in luxurious swatches of mesh.

International celebrities seem to push the envelope while adopting mesh into their wardrobes. While A-listers like Kim Kardashian showed off her innerwear through her mesh attire, others like Taylor Swift kept it elegant . Fashion forwards like Natalie Dormer and Katy Perry too have played around with mesh to suit their personalities. Back home, stars like Priyanka Chopra and Kangna Ranaut have also experimented their looks with mesh ensembles.

For the girl on the go, mesh fabrics can be extremely versatile. Just the thickness of the mesh can say lots about your style. While micro-mesh is utterly feminine, athletic mesh gives a sporty finish. A slouchy mesh top will look great with jeans or with faux leather pants. But for a more formal or dressy event, intricately patterned mesh will seal the deal. If showing off to much skin is not your thing, opt for layering. Wear a neon camisole under a mesh blouse to make the colour pop from under. Or wear a patterned bustier while going for a bolder look.

Mesh could be the coolest trend this season for the fearless fashion folk.

Cruise Control

c-2ome summer and our eyes long for the azure blue of the high seas and the cool, cool breeze to playfully flirt with the bronze of our skin.  And what better way to surf the white waters than to embrace sailor chic or nautical stripes and patterns and take the boat out to the waters or simply sip cocktail by the beach.

The international runways have been flooded with designs that scream nautical, just in time for the well-heeled folk to take off on their exotic beach holidays. While Kenzo combined two trends together for their take on nautical – logo Tees and the classic combination of white and blue, Tanya Taylor went easy on the silhouettes with her nautical inspired collection for resort fashion. With Viktor & Rolf’s ensembles you could easily go from prep school onto your sail boat. Valentino took classy navy shades and brass buttons and put together a look for the elegant dresser. J Crew combined denim hot pants with a blazer to give it a formal look.

Having its early roots in Madame Coco Chanel’s designs, nautical prints and designs seem to be a huge hit among the who’s who of Hollywood. While Liv Tyler can single-handedly lift the trophy for channeling cool elegance, the wild child of fashion, Kate Moss too took to the Breton stripes and paired it with classic denim for a comfort look. While Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge has raised the flag high for the nautical trend, Zoe Saldana looked the high street way while shopping for her $50 nautical striped dress.

Wearing horizontal stripes could add to the optical illusion of a broader body type. So tread with caution. You could opt for solid bottoms if you want to wear your stripes on top. To play safe, you could keep your wardrobe colour limited to the classic white and blue. But if colour is more your thing, try stripes in a variety of hues. For a casual, laid-back look, pair a blouse with nautical motifs with blue denims. For a slightly formal looks, you could pull on a navy blazer and throw back a square kerchief around your neck. While choosing the right footwear, men could opt for casual loafers while women could slip on a pair of espadrilles for a completely head-to-toe nautical look. Big, slouchy hand bags look best with this trend and you could get inspired by the colours of the ocean while choosing the right one for you.

So now all you need to do is to plan a perfect picnic on the yacht and sail away. Aye, aye, Captain!

Trendy Thursdays- Short dresses with long sleeves

as summer inches closer, hemlines go shorter. But it looks like the swish set is not letting go off their sleeves, instead preferring to keep them full-length or long enough for the fabric to kiss the wrists. Wearing this style statement on their sleeves (pun intended) gives us glam girls the freedom to experiment with the length of our hemlines. Perfect it for a dazzling red carpet statement or go for a demure design for the workplace.

designersWhile Gwyneth Paltrow scored some sizzling brownie points with Saint Laurent’s LBD, Taylor Swift went for glam shine with her Zuhair Murad rendition. In anticipation of spring, Kerry Washington slipped into a soft pink Stella McCartney ensemble. Closer home, Parineeti Chopra opted for polka dots on her long sleeve-short dress while Lisa Haydon oozed elegance in her outfit. Singer-VJ Anusha Dandekar opted for some feathers and fun with her cobalt blue dress.

On the runway, Lebanese designer Elie Saab sent his models out in bejewelled dresses, in his trademark textured and iridescent designs. From Valentino, the colours were earthier instead of the ephemeral while Victoria Beckham’s designs were more fun and frolic, steering away from the regular red carpet prescription.  Aneeth Arora (Pero) had the quintessential Indian summer in mind when she added long sleeves to her floral designs while Sanchita kept hers cool and casual.

If you are more inclined towards a cleaner look, keep accessories to a minimum. You could opt for delicate charm bracelets dangling off your wrists to add an extra dollop of elegance. To look like the belle of the ball, step into a pair of stilettoes or induce some extra glamour by donning a pair of shiny metallic sling-backs. And if comfort style is more your thing, you could pair your attire with a pair of smoking slippers. In terms of pairing a bag with your dress, steer clear of large hobos and instead opt for dainty clutch purses to complete the look.

No points for guessing that this trend could be your best bet to enter the season’s coveted dress circle.
