Take a leaf out of Kalki’s Style Diary

Kalki Koechlin's style

I have seen Kalki Koechlin in many avatars on and off screen, and have loved every one of them. Kalki says she has a mercurial style of dressing, and I couldn’t agree more. One day in a flirty floral dress and another in a serious silk sari; who says you can’t look fabulous in everything? With a slender frame and an enviable height, she has the ideal body type for all genres of fashion, both Indian and Western.

Not spotted in ethnic Indian outfits much (except for the occasional Sabyasachi lehenga-sari), she did say that she loves to wear saris (yes, she said so to me!), and wears them quite often. Note how amazing she looks in the black sari that she wore for the Star N Style event at the Myntra office in Bangalore (check above image). Compare that to the dress she wore at a previous event, and you will be convinced the girl can carry off just about any look with elan.

When dressing for a “romantic” date she said that she likes to keep it simple and comfortable, and would love to wear a gunjee with jeans and flat sandals. But she wouldn’t say no to a nice hat, considering that it makes a powerful style statement. If you’ve noticed, she is quite big on accessories, from scarves to jewellery, whether it’s a beaded necklace, a delicate pendant or even a statement piece.

A lover of rain coats in pop colours, she prefers them to umbrellas. I think she would look quite cute in them! I’ve seen that Kalki experiments with her hair quite a bit, including wavy, straight and messy styles. While the messy braid and bun look quite cool on her, I felt that her hairstyle in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara suited her a great deal, and made her look even younger. What say?

She has a self-confessed weakness for pyjamas, and wishes it would be considered stylish to wear them when going out. Sigh! Don’t we all? Hats off to this tall, willowy girl, who doesn’t need international brands to look stylish (different thing that she has quite a few).

This month saw the launch of Star N Style in Myntra, and we couldn’t have asked for a better star than Kalki Koechlin. She’s famous for her portrayal of quirky characters on-screen. Kalki Koechlin – A Red Carpet Affair to Remember

What is the first thing you think of when you see Kalki Koechlin on the red carpet? Her charming countenance? Her electrifying smile? Her perfect ten figure? For me, it is a combination of all these and her endearing persona for, let’s face it, you just cannot miss Kalki whenever she makes an appearance at the most happening soirees in the cinema and fashion circles. In this piece, I pick out five of her most recent red carpet looks, deconstruct her sense of knockout red carpet style, and recreate an all-time favourite look with our very own Myntra products. This one is indeed a blazing entry in our red carpet diaries…

Kalki on the Red Carpet

Kalki Koechlin has been there and done it all- from the Cannes Film Festival and the IIFA Awards to the Filmfare Awards and the Colors Screen Awards, she has had the paparazzi scramble to get a picture of her, every single time. Be it the sheer grey tulle half saree with the scarlet head ornament (an international show of impressive and influential Indian dress sensibilities), or the pleated satin dress with the chunky black jewellery and the patterned grey purse, she can give most Hollywood A-listers a run for their money. A firm believer in fashion experimentation, Kalki has even donned a chromatic and layered sleeveless ankle-length dress with a jeweled waistband (not to mention the trendy side braid) and black pencil heels. She has also played it classy, a case in point being the flowing black gown with a magnificent lace neckline that she sported at a recent movie awards ceremony. This takes us to the look I favour most, the vibrant pink square-neck sleeveless gown with a simplistic black clutch, black watch, black heels and last but not the least, her shiny mane let loose. Kalki sure knows how to keep it sharp and realistic yet uber stylish and sophisticated. And to make it even more interesting, here is a rendering of the stunning diva-in-pink look with merchandise that is available right here at Myntra.

Kalki's Red Carpet Look Revisited with Myntra Products

For a young Bollywood star on the rise, Kalki Koechlin sure knows her fashion! She makes you want to fish out a clipboard and start jotting down some pointers about style (read: keeping abreast of the current trends whilst maintaining an incisive personal flavour), doesn’t she? After all, the ability of making the rest of one’s surrounding melt away, and having your audience’s eyes riveted only on you comes with a lot of effort being put into how you style your look. Here’s to Kalki and her power to make thousands of women (including me) be comfortable in their own skin, to dress to impress; here’s to the country’s next big fashionista! Kalki, if you are reading this, I would only like to say… encore!

Get the Look: Kalki Koechlin-PART II

Remember, I had written about Kalki’s look in Dev D and That Girl in Yellow Boots recently? I hope you tried out the looks (and stunned everyone with your makeover).  Let’s check out her style from three more of her popular Bollywood movies.

Kalki in Shaitan

If you like Goth, but don’t want to wear too much makeup, this style might appeal to you. Wear a black strappy bandage dress, pair it with black Mary Janes, paint your nails black, put on a black and white beaded bangle, and some black eye liner. And if you want a more Goth-y, all-black look, switch this bangle for a black one, along with heavily hooded eyes and dark lips. What do you need to rock this look apart from the dress and accessories? Tons of sexy attitude!

Kalki in Shanghai

What comes to mind when you think of ethnic wear? A pretty girl eating aloo tikki at a Punjabi wedding in a jazzy ghagra choli replete with sequins, or maybe a jhola-donning journalist in a maroon cotton kurta and Kolhapuri chappals. In Shanghai Kalki shows us how to look effortlessly chic and chilled out in ethnic wear. Pair a crisp white kurta (sleeve length is left to your discretion) with brightly coloured leggings, and tone down the brightness with a scarf/stole/dupatta in pastel shades. I think flat sandals would be ideal, but you can also try kitten heels. Make up would kill the look; apply lip balm generously for supple lips. Keeping accessories to a bare minimum, wear only a slim watch. Easy peasy!

Kalki in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Not too many girls would say no to the Chanel jacket, Hermes or Tod’s bag that Kalki was seen sporting in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Sigh! Let’s try to recreate her look in the movie, minus the designer bags (Bagwati et al). I wanted to take a classy strapless dress and make it a little casual by pairing it with playful wedges. I think it works! Couple it with a smart clutch and feminine watch. And if you want a more dapper look, trade the wedge heels for off-white or nude pumps, and for a more fun look, try experimenting with neon peep toe pumps.

Her million-watt smile can light up the darkest room. Clichéd, but apt when it comes to Kalki Koechlin. She has acted in a bunch of Bollywood movies, and in each of them, has had a distinct look that you will find tough to forget, or rather would love to remember, and maybe even emulate.

Kalki in Dev D

Kalki channelled the school girl look in a rather sexy way in Dev D, and so can you. Notice her knotted white shirt, slim red tie, luminous face and cute pom-poms in her hair? Try it out for yourself; get a white shirt, pick up a red tie (even if it’s dad’s or brother’s, who cares?), use lots of waterproof mascara, wear some plumping lip gloss for lips that look naturally pouty and kissable, and a cute little hairband. Perfect for a bachelorette party or some naughty role-playing ;-)

Kalki in That Girl in Yellow Boots

With a powerful performance in That Girl in Yellow Boots, Kalki stole many hearts, and left many stunned beyond words. To recreate her casual look, throw on a pair of distressed or ripped denims, a tunic top, and of course a pair of signature, funky yellow shoes. Don’t forget to carry a sling bag, wear some colourful stacked accessories on one hand, and a sleek watch on the other. Add a tribal-ish necklace to your neck, put on aviators and you’re ready to make heads turn with ease.

Which of these two looks would you actually experiment with?
