Slip and slide

channel your inner Kate Moss ladies, because slip dresses are what’s hot this spring. From glossy satin to casual jersey this is one outfit that prides itself on being quite versatile whatever the fabric may be. And it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted.

The runways around the world have seen the slip dress in all its glory. Jason Wu gave us a printed design that had almost a textured feel to it, while Cavalli’s runways were graced by the glamorous types perfect for a fancy gala dinner. Max Mara played it simple while Helmut Lang colour-blocked and Theyskens’ Theory layered the slip dress.

The Louis Vuitton slip dress that Victoria Beckham wore to the 2013 Wimbledon managed to steer all eyeballs towards her as she stood out from among the more conservative dressing prevalent at the matches. What’s more, the designer-stylista has worked this dress differently on each of its many outings.

Nicole Richie has shown us how utterly glam a Marc Jacobs gold slip dress can be while Amy Adams keeps it chic in L’Wren Scott. Closer home, no one has probably donned this trend better than our very own style chameleon Kangana Ranaut. She definitely gets Style Mynt’s vote!

Most popular in the ’90s, the slip dresses currently doing the rounds are less Courtney Love and more Madonna. If you are the kind who doesn’t mind showing some skin, it’s just the right season to slip into a slinky slip. But those on the heavier side, tread with caution.

If worn the right way, it can win you some major fashion brownie points but if worn wrong, it could make you look like you just rolled out of bed. Casual slip dresses can be paired with summer jackets, light cardigans and strappy sandals. Add a cross body bag for the additional relaxed touch. Go sophisticated with this dress by adding pointy pumps, sleek drop-earrings and subtle make up. Make a statement witha bold clutch or a glam statement neckpiece. Wear a red slip dress to a hot date, a lace panelled one if you are going for that ’90s look and a grey or blush number for that ultra-feminine-classy look.

Our verdict? Make the slip dress for keeps this season.

Chinwag with Chitrangda

The gorgeous Chitrangda Singh is the chosen star for the Myntra Star N Style campaign for the months of November and December. Over the next two months, we hope to bring to you vignettes from our interaction with the star, that would reveal her personal style, top picks from her wardrobe, memorable fashion moments and of course style tips from Chitrangda herself for all you lovely people.

Chitrangda is already in love with Myntra. “It’s a great portal. There’s a lot of freedom to shop and  you can also return if you don’t like something. So it’s pretty easy. I really like that concept. It’s a great facility. There are so many brands to choose from.”

I met the Desi Boyz actress sans make up when at an Andheri studio for our shoot that was being styled by noted stylist Aki Narula. And I have to admit a tad reluctantly albeit that I caught myself gaping at her flawless olive skin and sparkling, deep eyes. Everyone transforms with make up, but here’s an actress who looks as good even without it!

The other thing that really left me impressed was the fact that Chitrangda is really in sync with fashion. She came across as someone who follows fashion and enjoys it, yet isn’t really someone who’s a slave to trends and labels. That’s our favourite attitude to fashion and CS has it.

Here Chitrangda chats with me about, what else, but that fickle mistress called fashion. Enjoy!

MY PERSONAL STYLE: It’s definitely not something that changes with fashion. I don’t follow fashion intensely. I keep things basic, structured and like clean lines. I don’t go for too much of bling. I’m not very experimental, maybe a bit with hair and make up, but my personal wardrobe remains simple. I like effortless dressing.

MY FAVOURITE FASHION DECADES: I love the kind of stuff they used to wear in the 60s and 70s and it’s great that all of that is coming back now. I really like that old time charm. I also like the 80s, what  Madonna wore. The padded shoulders, the neons are all coming back.

MY FAVOURITE LOOK FROM MY FILMS: I like my look in the item song Kaafirana in Joker. It’s something I had never done before. I have mostly done the urban , modern woman look. The whole kajal and hair in the song is something I quite like.

KEY PIECES IN MY WARDROBE:

Blazer jackets; you can put it on a pair of jeans or anything else you’re wearing and it really dresses you up. I have them in monotones like black, blue, pinks and whites, sequined and I usually wear them with a pair of red or gold heels. It really dresses you up.

White shirt. I have plenty of them. A white shirt on jeans is a timeless look.

Nude heels

White keds

Jeggings

MY FAVOURITE CELLULOID CHARACTER: One of the most stylish celluloid character was Miranda Priestly (played by Meryl Streep) in The Devil Wears Prada. But the most fashionable one was Elvira Hancock (Michelle Pfeiffer) in Scarface. She was amazing, elegant, understated and wore her confidence. She looked beautiful.

Stay tuned for more from the dusky damsel in the coming weeks.

Halle Berry: August 14th

Meow says the Bond Girl! Monster’s Ball fetched her the much-coveted Academy Award, making Halle Berry a household name. Then came Die Another Day, where she emerged from the sea in an orange bikini with a broad white belt, bringing her into the club of sexy Bond girls. She has so many looks on and off screen, it’s tough to pick a favourite. She pulls off bangs really well, with both straight and wavy hair, she has sported both single-length and asymmetrical bobs, curly and straight hair in different lengths and of course the famous pixie. A lover of black and white, she prefers wearing these colours on the red carpet, and off it loves to dress in sweaters with fitted pants.

Mila Kunis: August 14th

Mila Kunis is adored the world over for her innocent-yet-come-hither look with the perfect hourglass figure and a style dictionary that encompasses everything from girl-next-door to delicate-little-angel-on-the-red carpet. That 70’s Show and Family Guy catapulted her to success, while Black Swan brought her into the league of the gorgeous and popular. I wish she hadn’t gotten rid of her gorgeous curly tresses though. True, she looks chic with her sleek hair, especially when she dons her designer (Christian Dior, Elie Saab, Alexander McQueen, Vera Wang are amongst her favourite designers) evening gowns, but those curly locks would add to her allure even more. Agree?

Ben Affleck: August 15th

From Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez to Jennifer Garner (current wife), from winning the Oscar for the Best Screenplay (Good Will Hunting) and the Razzie for Worst Actor (Daredevil, Gigli, Paycheck), Ben Affleck has literally been there, done that. *Snigger*. He looks equally handsome in a pair of jeans and T-shirt as he does in a black tuxedo. Ben has experimented quite a bit with his hair, from formal spiky to short spiky and conservative. I am not a big fan of his beard; he looks way better with lightly tousled hair and a slight stubble, or clean shaven.

Madonna: August 16th

Who can say she’s 54 years old? Not I at least! With the looks of a 30 year old woman and energy of a 16 year old, she is more than just the princess of Pop; Madonna is undoubtedly the queen of this genre. Her trademarks range from red lips, athletic figure, leotards, to Jean Paul Gaultier conical bras, Marilyn Monroe-ish hair and style, goth-inspired ensembles and more. She loves to experiment, and more often than not, shocks the world with her brazen and sometimes bizarre outfits. A salute to the style diva of this century.

Blake Lively: August 25th

The ultimate Gossip Girl, her first step into Hollywood was The Sisterhood of The Travelling Pants. It is rumoured that she merely left her photo with the casting agents, didn’t even audition, but was still picked as she seemed to be perfect for the role. What luck, huh? This leggy lass is close to 5 feet 11 inches tall, and apparently hates wearing heels, though she is frequently seen in sky-high stilettos. This super stylish girl loves her colours and has been spotted in tangerine, crimson, lavender, midnight blue, candy pink and of course neutrals like black, grey and white. Not for nothing is Blake the face of Gucci and Chanel, and is regularly voted amongst the sexiest women in the world.

Cameron Diaz: 30th August

She burst onto the silver screen crooning like a sexy siren in The Mask, and obviously became hot property soon after. Not just a pretty face, Cameron is also amazingly versatile, having played both good girl (My Best Friend’s Wedding) and bad girl (Bad Teacher. Duh!) with absolute panache, and has even recorded for the animated Shrek series as the princess. Her trademarked smile and dance moves are instrumental in her being voted as one of most beautiful people in the world; of course her sexy body plays a major role too. She looks stunning even when she dresses down, like in a basic pair of jeans and T-shirt. From fiery reds to glorious blacks, whether she’s showing off her toned legs or her tantalising cleavage, or is sort of covered up, she’s an absolute rock star.
